Meghan’s Plant Bag

Even though I don’t like poison ivy, plants are pretty cool. I like seeing their different colors and their roots, stems, and leaves. Isn’t it amazing how God crammed all that stuff into one tiny little a seed? You can watch seeds grow without any dirt. You need:

A small handful of bird seed
One small plastic sandwich baggie, the kind that zip shut
One paper towel
Water
A stapler
Tape

  1. First, get the whole paper towel wet. Squeeze out the excess water, then fold the paper towel into a square small enough to fit into the plastic baggie.
  2. Slip the paper towel into the plastic baggie like you are stuffing a letter into an envelope.
  3. Starting at least two inches from the bottom, staple horizontally all the way across the bottom of the plastic baggie. The staples should be close enough that no seeds will slip between them.
  4. Sprinkle in the small handful of seeds. A single layer row reaching across the top of the staple line works best.
  5. Seal the baggie closed. Tape it to the window where it will get lots of sunshine.
  6. In a few days, the seeds sprout. The roots will extend down below the staple line and the stem will grow toward the top of the baggie.
  7. Important: if your paper towel dries, wet it again with a small amount of water.

Meghan’s All Dressed Up Flip Flops

Since we’re talking about getting all dressed up, why not create your own pair of fancy schmancy flip flops? You need:

A pair of cheap, plain-old flip flop sandals
A hot glue gun (and a handy adult to help you use it)
Your favorite kind of decoration (fake flowers, buttons, beads, pom-poms, foam or felt cut-outs, fake jewels, you get the idea)

  1. Plan where you want to glue your decorations along the strap part of the shoe.
  2. Heat up the glue gun.
  3. Glue your items down (with the help of your handy adult).
  4. TADA! Now that you’re done, check out a fun science activity called Sneaker Launcher. I found it on ZOOM’s website. (Just please promise me that you’ll come back after you visit! I don’t want you to miss Ryan’s jokes.)
